Lamanai Travel up river on the route of the ancient Maya and be spellbound at the sight of great pyramids rising above the jungle floor. Situated along the New River lagoon in the tropical rain forest, Lama'an'ain (Maya for submerged crocodile) was one of the most continuously occupied of all ancient Maya cities—from about 500 BC to 1675 - probably in part due to its location on a major trade route, the New River Crooked Tree One of Belize's oldest villages is home to great numbers of migrating and nesting birds. A daybreak paddle on a nearby lagoon is a bird-watcher's dream. Cerros Maya Across the bay from Corozal Town lie the ruins of Cerros Maya. The site is reached by a circuitous route along the Bay of Corozal. The river crossing is made on a hand-cranked platform ferry. Community Baboon Sanctuary An innovative project in sustainable ecotourism In addition to numerous howler troops, an abundance of wildlife life is found within the sanctuary. Nearly 200 bird species have been identified in the area, and cats such as jaguars, ocelots, puma, and jagarundi are native to this lowland. |
